Dental crowns are important restorative dental treatments that dentists use to help restore full function and protect the tooth. A dentist can use a dental crown to save a weak or broken tooth. What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is like a cap that will cover the entire tooth. A dental lab will custom-make it from dental impressions so it will look like a natural tooth and fit perfectly. They will make them from various materials depending on your oral health needs and cosmetic desires. Dr. Tu uses these tooth-shaped caps for various restorative and cosmetic reasons.
What are Dental Crowns used for?
Dental crowns are versatile dental restorations. They can serve many purposes, and Dr. Tu can customize one to meet your aesthetic and functional needs. Dr. Tu may recommend a crown for any of the following restorative reasons:
- Support and strengthen a tooth after a root canal
- Replace a large old, worn down tooth filling
- Repair a large broken or chipped tooth
- Support a tooth with a large crack
Dentists will also utilize them for cosmetic dentistry reasons. A crown is an affordable alternative to a porcelain veneer. Dr. Tu may recommend a crown for any of the following cosmetic reasons:
- Change the appearance of a crooked or misshapen tooth
- Whiten teeth by hiding discolored, stained or yellow teeth
- Close the gaps between teeth
- Lengthen teeth that are too short
About the Dental Crown Process
You will need to visit our Cedar Rapids, IA dentist office at least twice to complete the treatment process. During your first appointment, Dr. Tu will need to prepare the tooth. He needs to reduce the tooth to create enough room for the dental crown to fit properly. To accomplish this, he will remove any old fillings or crown as well as any decayed or damaged portion of the tooth.
We will take several impressions of your teeth including one for a temporary crown. Then we’ll place a temporary crown to protect the tooth and for aesthetic purposes until your new one is made.
Once we receive your new crown from the dental laboratory, you will return to our Cedar Rapids, IA area dentist office for the final placement. Dr. Tu will remove the temporary crown and bond the new one to your tooth with strong dental adhesive. He will then gently shape, smooth, and polish your new dental crown to create a natural look.
Implant-supported Crowns
If you have a single missing tooth, Dr. Tu may recommend a dental implant supported dental crown. This popular dental restoration is the number recommended way to replace a single tooth. The implant is a metal post that is surgically placed in the jaw to replace the missing tooth root and provide a solid foundation for a tooth crown. With proper care, it will last a lifetime.
